The 17th annual Virginia Festival of the Book kicked off with a leadership breakfast in Charlottesville Wednesday morning. The meal was followed by lectures spread out across the City.

The mission of the VFB is to unite book lovers who have a passion for learning and to celebrate books, reading, literacy and culture.

The 5-day event (March 16-20) includes plenty of free literary events that are open to the public. Speakers include Katheryn Stockett, author of The Help and Kathy Reichs.

"This is a chance for people to interact around the festival with writers and scholars, and to really explore the work they are doing and the ideas that you can find in the published work," said Guian McKee, an Associate Professor of Public Policy at the University of Virginia.

Also taking place Wednesday, Doris Buffett the sister of Warren Buffett, an investor and philanthropist, spoke about her book Giving It All Away: The Doris Buffett Story.

Buffett also talked about her philosophy on philanthropy and supporting women and children in need. The event was sponsored by the Women United in Philanthropy organization.
