A Greener Charlottesville: Happy Rickshaw

As gas prices continue to rise, more and more people are turning to hybrids to get from point A to point B. But what if you could travel without burning single drop of gasoline? One local company is doing just that.
"Your at the corner, you want to get a cab. You call up yellow, your waiting, your waiting, your waiting, and then this knight in shining armor comes by ringing his bell and you hop on. it's kind of a no brainer." This is the idea behind the Happy Rickshaw, a local company started by two UVa grads who pride themselves on providing truly green transportation to Charlottesville. "We're not just about setting an example, we're about actually being green. So we're out there doing it, people are paying for a service that is really green, that provides an actual service to them" says Ian Ayers, co-owner of Happy Rickshaw.
Lets crunch some numbers... a taxi cab gets about 15 miles per gallon in the city. If that cab travels 30,000 miles in one year, 28,000 pounds of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. A rickshaw driver exhales only about half a pound of CO2 a day and burns no gas only calories. "I'd probably say on an average night these guys are burning between 1500 and 3000 calories."
In addition to being ecofriendly the rickshaw fair is less than a cab, just about as fast, and much more fun. "Hey rickshaw hey right here woo rickshaw!" says Phil Baughman a Happy Rickshaw driver. "Often times tips are in the form of kisses. girls love rickshaws, I don't know something about a guy on a bike with a couch behind it is pretty cool." Nate Shaw a rickshaw driver. Mike Como, a Happy Rickshaw driver says, "a really nice college student around 10 o'clock, but they tend to get more free as the night goes on and then it becomes interesting." "It's sustainable, your supporting a local company and you really just need to get over your fears and get on the rickshaw" says Paul Berry, Happy Rickshaw driver.
You can catch a Happy Rickshaw Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night anywhere from the UVa corner to the downtown mall. The drivers say just to give it a shot and then you'll be hooked.
