A group of UVA students are fighting back against several recent racial incidents. At least 60 student volunteers have formed a safety group. Each night, two groups of three will accompany students around campus grounds. They hope the system will help the students to feel safer.

The efforts come in response to several hate messages found last week, one written on a black students message board.

"We want students to know from outside the university that they can come here-that this is a safe place to be-and anything we can do to make them feel safe and secure in our community that's a step in the right direction," said Program Organizer Benjamin Sachs.

The test program will run for three weeks. Student council will then evaluate whether to continue it long-term.
