Serial Rapist Lead in Waynesboro

Video will be available shortly.

September 7, 2005

Not all doors are closed in the investigation into the serial rapist. Police in Waynesboro say they have their own person of interest in the investigation. The serial rapist first struck at a hotel in Waynesboro in 1997.

The victim had come out of her hotel room and went to her car to grab a lap top computer.

She left the door open and when she went back inside that's when she was attacked.

Waynesboro Police Detective Robert Luzader said, "We interviewed all the people in the motel that night and canvassed the area but didn't develop any suspects at that point."

Two years later, they learned this case was linked to a rape in Charlottesville and police had a serial rapist on their hands.

After 8 years of working this case and many more attacks by this rapist, Waynesboro police now say a cold lead has turned into a possible suspect.

"One gentleman told me that there was an individual who worked with him part time who was strange. The man got off work around the same time the incident happened but he couldn't recall the man's name. He called me about four months ago and said he remembered that guys name," said Luzader.

In their investigation, they turned up even more information that led Waynesboro Police to believe the man could be a person of interest and they sent a DNA sample off to a Roanoke lab for testing. Those test results are expected back next week.
