Residents in the Parks Edge apartment complex are reacting to the bomb-making materials found in an apartment there.

Albemarle County police arrested 22-year-old Jonathan Dean who lived in the apartment. Investigators say he was unemployed and lived in the apartment alone. Arlene Mills alerted police Saturday after she smelled gas coming from Dean's apartment.

"You could really smell it, because that[Dean's] window was propped open with a bottle," said Mills.

Inside Dean's apartment, authorities found all sorts of bomb making materials.

"We found CO2 cartridges, we found black powder, fuses, we found propane," said James Barber of the Albemarle County Fire Rescue.

Dean's neighbors tells CBS19/ABC16 he was quiet and anti-social, but although they thought he was strange they never suspected what was happening inside his apartment.

"He appeared to be very strange, very strange, [he] didn't speak, seemed to be a sneaky type person," said Mills.

Police arrested Dean as he was arriving home. They found a bomb inside the backpack he was wearing. They later detonated it inside some nearby woods.

"It could've done a significant amount of damage, and again the real potential there is for injury or loss of life," said Barber.

That thought scares Mills who's left wondering what could've happened if she hadn't of told police.

"It could have been all of these people in this apartment building that could have been gone, so many innocent lives and I was just scared," said Mills.

Investigators say Dean had no prior record, they're still investigating what he planned to do with the bomb found in the backpack he was wearing.

Dean is charged with four felonies, including possession of a bomb and bomb making materials. He is currently being held without bond. His next court appearance is set for December 8..
