Kaine Defeats Kilgore In Governor's Race

November 8, 2005

Democrat Tim Kaine has defeated Republican Jerry Kilgore in the race for governor of Virginia in a bitter election that was the most expensive in state history.

Kaine won 51 percent of the vote, while Kilgore had 47 percent and Independent Russ Potts got two percent.

As recently as the weekend, independent polling showed Kaine and
Kilgore deadlocked in a race that featured Kaine's attempts to link
himself to the accomplishments of popular Governor Mark Warner, who
by law wasn't allowed to serve a second term. Kilgore hit Kaine hard on the death penalty and illegal immigration.

Together, the three campaigns amassed more than $42 million
through October -- nearly a third greater than the nearly
$32 million raised four years ago. Final totals are expected to
be millions of dollars more.
