You may have noticed a new historical marker as you pass by McIntire Road in Charlottesville.

Monticello Wine Company unveiled the marker, symbolizing the first large winery in Virginia back in 1873.

Stone Mountain Vineyards paid for the historic marker and they said it's dedicated to the local wine industry.

"This is an industry that builds on the shoulders of others and a lot of good work has been done here establishing Charlottesville as the center of Virginia's wines so I just wanted to help take it to the next step so that's why we were glad to sponsor the marker," said Chris Breiner.

This event kicks off Virginia Wine Month.
