Local football greats were reunited and honored tonight.

This fall marks the fiftieth anniversary of the 1963 Lane High School State Football Champions and the 1963 Burley High School undefeated season.

On Friday night, both teams were recognized at the Charlottesville High School Theodose stadium during halftime of Charlottesville's game against Western Albemarle.

"Here it is, 50 years later, and we've had an opportunity to unite the two teams around a school which united the two schools. Charlottesville High is...a combination of Lane and Burley," said George King, Lane class of 1964.

"Like George {Foussekis} said, the coaches taught us so much about life. We said about the field, it's just like we were there yesterday. It doesn't smell the same because it's artificial turf, but seeing the coaches and being together with friends is what life's about," said Gene Arnette, Lane '64 and starting quarterback and leading passer for the University of Virginia in 1967 and 1968.

"It put us in a good place," added Don Thacker, Lane '64 and Canadian Football League player.

"We still got that cold chill running up and down our backs. We think we can still play a play or two!" said George Foussekis, Lane '64 and 1966 Second All-American Team member, earned for his work as a defensive end at Virginia Tech.

Lane alumni said around 12,000 people would attend their high school games in the mid-1960s.

After halftime, the reunion continued with a dance featuring local band The Detours. The Detours played rock n' roll music in the CHS cafeteria. The Detours are a local band who used to play after football games in the sixties. Special guest Pete Carey joined the group for vocals.
