Today the 30,000 people who receive Medicare in the Charlottesville area, are eligible to sign up for a new prescription drug assistance plan.

The new assistance program has 40 plans to choose from that would help those receiving Medicare cut between 20-40 percent of cost on prescription drugs.

Applying for the plan can be difficult task for anyone. With a large percentage of Medicare beneficiaries being senior citizens, picking a plan that best fits them could be overwhelming. That's why it is advised that if you know a person on Medicare who may apply for this new assistance plan, try to help them with the application process.

The Jefferson Board of Aging, also known as JABA, says they will help those who need assistance, but they can't do it alone.

"People will have good choices, but particularly for some of the higher priced drugs and the drugs that are maybe less commonly prescribed, people may need to compare plans to find one that covers all or most of their drugs. Maybe if someone takes a lot of drugs, there won't be any single plan that covers all of them," explained Sally Mank of JABA.

For more information here are a few website the may help with the applying process:

There is also a number you can call to help you find someone in your state that will help you with the assistance, 1-800-677-1116.

For those interested in the plan, you have until May 15th, 2006 to apply.
