Knitting to Keep the Homeless Warm

For the homeless, winter can be overwhelmingly cruel and cold, especially if they have nothing to keep them warm.

Over at the Salvation Army, Kimberly Farish's office is lined with boxes that are filled with dozens of hand-knitted scarves, hats, and mittens.

Last year, the reality of seeing the homeless left out in the cold moved Farish to lend a helping hand.

"It was snowing and raining, they're feet were wet, they had no gloves, they were very miserable and I felt compassion towards them so I went home and started knitting and crocheting," said Kimberly Farish of the Salvation Army.

Farish and a friend began knitting last year as a hobby. They managed to keep about 150 people warm with their free hand-knitted items. This year The Salvation Army has picked up the program and they're hoping to triple that number.

"We organized with some churches and some private individuals who have donated tons and tons of yarn, so over the summer we were able knit and crochet a bunch of items," said Farish.

Shirley White isn't homeless, but she is living on a low-income, so buying these winter essentials isn't really an option.

"It's wonderful and you don't find many people that would do this for someone and it's coming from the heart and the Lord," said White.

For Farish it's that gratitude that motivates her to keep knitting. For those left abandoned, broke and cold, it's a simple act of kindness that will warm even their hearts.

"Simple acts are sometimes better than big acts, because they mean a lot," said Farish.
