Staying Healthy This Winter

November 21, 2005

If you've been seeing a little too much of the doctor lately, you're not alone. With winter knocking at our door, many are starting to feel the unpleasant effects of its arrival.

"We're certainly right now seeing a lot of strep [throat]. We haven't seen a lot of the true influenza yet, but undoubtedly, it will hit soon enough," said Dr. William Streicker, the Medical Director for Prompt Care in Charlottesville.

Armed with this information, there are several simple things that you can do to help prevent the spread of sickness in our area.

"When [you] cough, rather than coughing into [your] hand, [you] should cough into your elbow," said Streicker.

This prevents the spreading of germs by your hands, which is one of the most common ways germs are spread.

"[You] should use hand sanitizers frequently, especially if [you] are ill. Drinking lots of fluids also helps to keep the respiratory tract clear," said Streicker.

When sickness does strike, there is a plethora of medicines to choose from. A stroll through the medicine aisle of any grocery store can leave many feeling overwhelmed; however, knowing which medicine to purchase can be extremely important to your health.

"I try and stick with just the basic product and not having it compounded with a lot of other things because sometimes you're getting things in there that you don't really need or want," said Streicker.

With just a little bit of preparation and common sense you can keep your health top notch. Plus, if you don't like the winter season and the sickness that comes with it remember, winter is merely a sneeze in Mother Nature's circle of seasons.

Doctors also recommend that you get a full night's sleep every night to keep your immune system fighting those nasty wintertime diseases.
