This combo platter of weather has made driving conditions slick and kept fire and emergency crews busy all day. Although the rain has stopped, the dangerous road conditions have remained, which wreaked havoc on drivers all day.

"Ice is ice, and I don't care what kind of car you drive, it's dangerous," said Angie Hypes.

As snow turned to rain, driving conditions have turned hazardous. Police and fire crews have been busy all day dealing with minor traffic accidents like this one on Scottsville Road. For Angie Hypes, the simple act of getting into her driveway scares her.

"I'm more nervous about getting home than anything because I don't think I am going to be able to get up the hill. And if I do, I'm scared I'm not going to be able to stop," she said.

But driving is not the only hazard out there.

"As people lose their power they start coming up with other ways to light their house, or tonight, to keep it warm," said Deputy Fire Chief Britt Grimm.

That appears to the case at this basement fire at 924 Monticello Avenue. This preliminary investigation reveals that a candle sparked this blaze that gutted the basement. Four men were home at the time, but no one was injured. Grimm said the department anticipated a busy night.

"We were expecting it, overstaffed for the day anticipating that we would be doing this most of the night," Grimm said.

As the rain continued to fall, and the slush continued to build up, crews continued to work. So what should you do in this mess? Hypes has one piece of advice.

"I think it's safer for people to stay home," she said.

Road crews reiterate that same exact statement. They say they will continue to work through the evening to hit any trouble spots that they find. They also hope that they hit all of the slushy mess before the possibility of any refreeze.
