Three brands of dog and cat food sold in Virginia are being recalled because they may contain aflatoxin, a dangerous toxin.
The food was made by Diamond Pet Food and is sold under the Diamond, Country Value and Professional labels. It's distributed in 23 states, including Virginia.
Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring toxic chemical byproduct of mold, which can cause sickness in pets. Symptoms include sluggishness, a reluctance to eat, a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums and severe or bloody diarrhea. Pet owners who see those symptoms should take their pet to a veterinarian immediately.
Diamond is recalling the products in question, which carry "Best By" date codes from "01-March-07" to "11-June-07." The Gaston facility marking, "G," is either the 11th or 12th character of the date code.
