More Controversial Comments from Lt. Governor Candidate

June 20, 2013

EW Jackson, the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, is facing criticism for some recent comments about slavery.

"Slavery did not destroy the black family," said Jackson to a group of people at the Juneteenth celebration in Newport News. "Even though it certainly was an attack on the black family, it make it difficult, but I'll tell you the programs that began in the 60s, the programs that began to tell women, you don't need a man in the home, the government will take care of you."

He says those programs have caused black families to deteriorate, more than slavery did.

Political experts say Republicans should have expected this.

"I don't think anyone should be surprised when EW Jackson says something controversial because he has a long history of making statements like that," said Kyle Kondik with the UVa Center for Politics. "And you know, this is what the Republicans should have known, this I think, probably before they nominated EW Jackson."

Jackson faces Democrat Ralph Northam in the November election.
