Thousands of amateur radio operators came out on Saturday as part of the American Radio Relay League's annual field day.

The purpose of the field day is to get Ham radio operators out practicing their skills, so that they will be ready in case of an emergency.

Ham radio operators often aid in emergency communication in cases where power is knocked out to a large area, like in a hurricane. Radio operators are helping maintain communication between far flung areas affected by the Colorado wildfires, where cell phone towers do not reach.

The local chapter of the ARRL set up behind the Earlysville Fire Department. They are using voice transmission and morse code to contact other operators as far away as Western Canada. Bragging rights go to the chapter that verifies contact with the highest number of other operators.
