Drag Pageant Benefits C'ville AIDS/HIV Services Group

June 23, 2013

There is a newly-crowned Miss Red Ribbon after the second annual drag pageant Sunday evening in Charlottesville.

The event, benefiting the AIDS/HIV Services Group, was held at Live Arts.

Dozens of people came out to support the non-profit and cheer on the three drag queens battling it out for the title -- Elecktra Symone, Taylor Morgan and Max.

Eight performers also took to the stage before Max was chosen to be Miss Red Ribbon 2013.

Last year's event raised about $4,000. ASG executive director Peter DeMartino says the money helps the group's mission of getting more people to know their status by testing for Hepatitis C, as well as HIV.

DeMartino says, besides serving as a fundraiser, the event is one big "thank you" to the drag community.

"Thirty years ago, when this virus hit and no one wanted to love people with HIV, the drag community was there, and they were the first fundraisers, the first advocates," said DeMartino. "This takes them out of the bars and puts them right where they belong -- on the stage, in the spotlight and really recognizes how much they've done for our community overall."

Each contestant was encouraged to get their friends tested. This year, 36 people were tested, which is four more than last year.

Miss Red Ribbon 2012, Nevaeh Symone, crowned the winner.
