A Virginia Beach soldier has been killed in Iraq by sniper fire, only 6 weeks into his deployment.

The Defense Department says Army PFC. George A. Lutz II was killed Thursday when his patrol was attacked by small arms fire in Fallujah. Lutz had been assigned to the Army's 9th Psychological Operations Battalion, 4th Psychological Operations Group, at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Lutz and his family lived in Virginia Beach. His parents live in Chesapeake. Lutz went to a Christian school in Virginia Beach and ran cross-country at Shenandoah University in Winchester.

He is survived by his wife, Tiffany, and two children, Tony, 3, and 5-month-old Ava.
