With the new year comes those new year resolutions, and it seems that getting in shape is in the top spot for many residents this year.
"I want to get back into shape and work out everyday. I played college basketball and it's been 2 years since I've been on a regular work out schedule. So this is the year, 2006," said Candace Lund.
Lund joins millions of others on a mission this year: to run, lift, and step their way back into shape. By the number of people going in and out of the ACAC in Albemarle Square, it seems at least for now they are serious.
"Today probably going to be the busiest day of the year for us. We've got everybody coming in that's going to be starting their membership, starting their resolutions program, weight loss," said ACAC membership coordinator, Joe Schwar.
In fact, the first three Mondays in January are the three busiest days of the year for health clubs. And while some may be newcomers, others are heading back after a break and they're ready and eager to get right to work. Some have already set those gym goals for 2006.
"My goal is to be able to get in the pool and swim laps which I haven't been able to do because of [an injury]. And I'll be here, three times a week," said ACAC member, Marilyn Mathews.
For the regulars however, the New Year it simply a matter of stepping it up a notch.
"Getting better and improving and getting more intense with the things I've been doing for the past year," said James Hahn.
However many, like Lund, are hoping they can keep it up, even after the new year doesn't feel that new anymore.
"I'm just going to force myself to get up and get to the gym," added Lund.
Because as they say--no pain, no gain.
ACAC estimates about 2,000 of their members passed through Monday.
