Healthy Eating After Holidays

The holidays are a time to give and a time to receive, and often times we end up on the receiving end of a few extra pounds.

Prahaladan Mandelkorn felt the affect of the holidays on his waistline--but he's already started losing weight. In fact, he's dropped 7 pounds.

"I've done this before a little bit, I know what works and it's pretty good the first week. We'll see what happens over the next few weeks, I'm on a 90-day program," said Mandelkorn.

The first step is--don't beat yourself up and eliminate bad food, but try and maintain your portion sizes.

"When people start using restrictive words like avoid or eliminate, what we see as nutritionist is that it makes that food item more desirable," said nutritionist Susan Del Gobbo.

During the holidays we often forget to eat our fruits and vegetables, but it's amazing what having one of these with each meal will do for your diet.

"It helps to keep weight normal because they are high in fiber and low in calories, they help to lower blood cholesterol," said Del Gobbo. "They contain lots of vitamins and minerals that you won't find in other food groups."

But some skip the veggies and go straight to the supplements.

"A lot of the multi-vitamin and cleansing packages tend to be big sellers right now because people want to get a fresh start," said Chris Koepp, sift manager of Integral Yoga Natural Foods.

An easy way to start over is by writing down what you eat and drink.

"If you journal what you eat and drink, you are more successful, not only at weight-loss, but also at weight loss maintenance," said Del Gobbo.

But eating healthy is only part of it. Exercise is also a key element to weight loss.
