The Charlottesville School Board is making some headway in their search for superintendent.

Currently they have almost six dozen applicants in the running.

The application period for the Charlottesville superintendent search has come to an end and 61 applicants are now being considered across the nation.

"They come from as far west as Washington state, a lot from the south, North Carolina, South Carolina up [to] Massachusetts," said School Board Chair Julie Gronlund.

Roughly 3/4 of the applicants are currently superintendents, assistant superintendents or principals.

"We have taken the time, developed a leadership profile, and really will have the opportunity to look at the people relative to what our needs are. I have a lot of confidence in this search. I feel very positive about it," said Gronlund.

Despite the extended timetable, local parents seem to share Gronlunds' optimism.

"We all kind of have a long term perspective that's just like choosing someone you're going to marry," said Jennifer Seide. "If it takes a long time to find the right person, it's worth the wait. My guess is that if they're taking their time, they'll find the right fit for the position."

"I'm guardedly optimistic that they'll be able to find somebody that will be able to come in and do a great job for our schools," said Dave Norris.

Norris has two children in the school system and while he wants a permanent superintendent in place as soon as possible, he also wants the Board to avoid having what happened with the former superintendent happen again.

Gronlund couldn't agree more with Norris.

"Last year's events exposed some of the weaknesses and some of the strengths of this division, and it's helped us again. We need to take the lessons from last year and move along," said Gronlund.

The Board expects to complete the interviewing process by the end of January.
