Charlottesville police are asking for your help to catch a bank robber. They released surveillance video from the December robbery of the Sun Trust Bank on Ivy Rd. hoping some will come forward with information.
The video shows the suspect heading toward a white car. When he places some of stolen money in his pocket, the die pack explodes and he is surrounded by a cloud of red smoke.
"When he was running down the street with red smoke coming out of his pocket he was obviously observed and then he dropped money on the ground where we found it and you can still see the red smoke," said Charlottesville Police Lt. Gary Pleasants.
Police say they recovered only some of the money in the parking lot of the Ivy Square shopping center and that the robber made off with some cash.
"It's a possibility he was injured. When the die pack exploded he may have been burned. The vehicle should have some red die in it from what came off his clothing and off his hands. He did have gloves on. If the vehicle is found it should have the die in it. It is very difficult to remove," said Pleasants.
Police believe the robber acted alone and drove off in a newer model white Nissan Altima with no front license plate.
"The vehicle does not have a front plate or any Virginia inspection on it. So we believe it is an out of state [vehicle]--probably a state that just requires one license plate, possibly North Carolina," said Pleasants.
Police are hoping anyone who may have seen this car or anything suspicious will come forward.
