Hot Weather Means Hot Paws

July 15, 2013

Veterinarians are warning dog owners that their pets face many problems in hot weather, especially when it comes to their walk.

The pads on dogs' feet are very sensitive, and long exposure to hot asphalt or concrete can cause superficial burns.

Veterinarians say there is an easy fix, and it mostly involves common sense.

"It's just like you. If you would not go running in that weather, you probably don't want to go exercising too much with your dog," says Veterinarian Geri Carlson. "That being said, they need to be walked. So short walks, shorten up on distance, don't go quite so long."

Carlson says one solution is to walk your dog on the grass.

There are also special booties you can get to cover their feet.
