Las Vegas police have arrested a real estate agent wanted in the 1984 rape of a University of Virginia student.

Charlottesville police say a woman came to them in December saying she was the victim of a rape 21 years ago. Police acted swiftly and tonight a suspect is behind bars.

Las Vegas police arrested real estate agent William Beebe last night. He's charged with raping a UVa student more than two decades ago.

"You can imagine having an incident like this occur and having so much time lapse and then it comes back into your life," said Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo.

Charlottesville police say the now 39-year-old woman called them after Beebe contacted her by email last October.

She told police Beebe raped her at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house on Madison road in 1984.

"The victim would say that she sought medical treatment and we're looking at whether records exist with respect to that," said Longo.

Longo said the victim told them she informed University officials she was raped at the time the incident happened, but it is unclear whether the University took any action. Police say they were never informed.

"What if any information was provided to the university at the time is something we are still looking into as is the University of Virginia," said Longo.

The alleged victim told police last year was the first time she heard from Beebe since 1986.

"It's remarkably courageous of this victim to come forth and reopen this aspect of her life," said Longo.

University spokeswoman Carol Wood told us the University is in contact with the alleged victim and is cooperating with Charlottesville police but can?t comment further on an ongoing criminal investigation.

Charlottesville police say they are now awaiting an extradition hearing to see if Beebe will be transported back to Charlottesville and face trial here. Beebe does have the right to fight extradition.

Beebe is being held without bond at a corrections facility in Nevada.
