Charlottesville Police are investigating an assault that happened on Third Street right off the downtown mall in the early morning hours on Saturday. The victim's friends and family say he was just trying to help a woman in need when he was attacked.

Just after midnight on Saturday morning after a night on the downtown mall, an act of kindness gets a Louisa man seriously injured and rushed to the hospital.

"The male victim heard what he thought was a scream from a female and began moving in that direction to investigate," said Lieutenant Ronnie Roberts of the Charlottesville Police Department.

The victim, 22 and his girlfriend, 19, were on the 200 block of Third Street trying to help out the woman when police say the victim was attacked by an African-American male who fled the scene.

"He was taken by friends and family that drove him to the University of Virginia Medical Center and that's when they noticed a puncture wound to the upper torso," Roberts said.

Police won't say what the victim was stabbed with but he was brought to the hospital in serious condition and friends who have been with the victim in the hospital since, says he still has internal bleeding and is on a lot of medication.

"We are looking for an African American male who is kind of stocky build, about 5' 7" in height, who was wearing a dark brown shirt and khaki shorts on the evening of this incident who was seen leaving the area in a van," said Roberts.

Since restaurants and bars were still open or beginning to close at the time of the incident, Charlottesville police are asking for any tips from the public, if they saw anything.

The girlfriend and best friend of the victim tell CBS19 that the man is currently a member of the U.S. Army and just returned home to Louisa several weeks ago.

If you have any information on the suspect or saw anything that night, you are asked to call Crimestoppers: 434-977-4000.
