Virginia Man Dies While Swimming in Michigan Lake

July 27, 2013

LONG LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say an Alexandria, Va., man has died while swimming in a Traverse City-area lake.

According to the Grand Traverse County sheriff's department, the 58-year-old victim disappeared Friday while trying to swim from an island in Long Lake to the mainland.

The man and another swimmer started out together, but the man said he couldn't make it and turned back to the island. The other swimmer told deputies he looked back, but lost sight of the man and assumed he'd made it to the island.

A sheriff's department dive team found the victim in about 50 feet of water between the mainland and the island.

The man's name wasn't released.
