It's been an up and down experience this year for the historic Hatton Ferry in Scottsville.

The ferry has seen more vandalism and theft recently than it ever has before.

On the other hand, the ferryman says it's been a record couple of months for riding across the river.

The high water levels that have helped the ferry have hurt its neighbors, the James River Runners, who report a loss of business this summer.

Still, the ferry has reported stolen signs and broken locks and donation boxes.

"We just got new chains we just put new locks on everything. We're in the process of having signs made which cost quite a bit of money," ferryman Craig McPherson said, adding that the signs can cost up to $300. "That's a little hard to replace stuff when you just get donations."

McPherson says the ferry is holding its own and that he's thankful for the 1,400 ferry visitors they get from all over the world each year.
