Lyme Disease Rates likely 10 times Higher than Previously Reported

August 20, 2013

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that there are more cases of Lyme disease every year in the U.S. than previously thought.

Lyme disease is most often transmitted by infected deer ticks. A new survey finds that the disease is about ten-times more common than previously reported.

Cases reported in Virginia have been trending up since the early 2000's.

The Commonwealth could have as many as 10,000 cases a year, instead of the 1,000 cases reported to the health department.

Local health officials are working with doctors to help more cases get reported.

"In June, we sent out a Lyme disease information packet to the doctors, talking to them about the increase in Lyme disease in the last few years, and to encourage them to do more reporting," says District Epidemiologist Stuart Hutter.

There were 57 cases of Lyme disease reported last year in the Thomas Jefferson District.
