Women's Rights Activists Fear Cuccinelli's Potential Plans

August 26, 2013

A group of female rights supporters expressed their fears Monday afternoon about electing Ken Cuccinelli as governor.

The group spoke out in front of the Albemarle County courthouse, saying they don't want to return to the days of dangerous, illegal abortions or where women don't have access to birth control.

Charlottesville Vice Mayor Kristin Szakos and Charlotte Brody, a registered nurse, shared comments with the crowd.

"I don't want Ken Cuccinelli deciding what I should do with my life, what my kids should do with their lives," Brody said. "That's personal, that's private, and I'll keep those decisions for myself."

Members of the group fear Cuccinelli, the Republican candidate for governor, will turn the clock backward on privacy and health care access for women by making abortion illegal in every circumstance and by banning certain birth control methods.

"We need a government that takes care of what the government needs to take care of -- the economy and roads and schools," Brody said. "And we need that government to let us make our own personal health decisions."

The group says the role of government is to make services available if the public decides to use them.

When asked about the specific claims from the group, the Cuccinelli campaign provided the following statement to the Newsplex:

"Terry McAuliffe has stood silently by as his Democratic friends degrade and harass women. Terry has been given numerous opportunities to denounce the despicable behavior of Anthony Weiner and other Democrat politicians, yet he refuses to take a principled stand for what's right. While Ken Cuccinelli is talking to voters about how to grow the economy and improve our education system, Terry McAuliffe continues to mislead Virginians with negative attacks and refuses to condemn his party members who have a habit of disrespecting and disparaging women."
