The University of Virginia hosted its 15th Annual Apple Conference at the Double Tree Hotel.

Hundreds of student athletes and athletic department administrators from more than 45 National Collegiate Athletic Association colleges and universities gathered at this conference to discuss a plan of action against substance abuse.

The University of Virginia's Apple Program is the leader in national training symposiums dedicated to substance abuse prevention and health promotion for student athletics.

During the weekend-long conference, attendees evaluate their athletics departments' programs and policies and develop a customized action plan to take back to their individual institutions.

"We have different schools, different universities presenting programs that they've done, so it's a lot of sharing of ideas and what's working back at your [University or College]," said Joe Bek, the Program Designer. "So these athletes and administrators, coaches and athletic trainers take these ideas back to their campuses."

The goal of the conference is simply to help colleges and universities examine and improve upon areas that impact their student athletes, and this includes everything from recruitment practices to sanctioning procedures, and drug policies.

The conference is funded by the NCAA.
