Sammons House & Cemetery Deemed 'Eligible' for National Register of Historic Places

August 27, 2013

There could be another potential roadblock for the Route 29 Western Bypass project.

The keeper of the National Register has determined an Albemarle County cemetery and home are eligible to be included in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Sammons House and Sammons/Ferguson Cemetery are off of Lambs Road in the county. The property is in the path of the proposed road project.

According to its website, the National Register of Historic Places is "the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation."

Representatives from the National Park Service visited the cemetery August 15 to gauge its historical significance.

The findings, released Tuesday, reveal the site is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as a single property. Previously, the Federal Highway Administration and VDOT argued the house and cemetery be treated as separate properties.

Earlier this year, a report by VDOT-hired Cultural Resources, Inc. concluded the home was not historically significant and would not meet the criteria for the National Register of Historic Places.

On Tuesday, VDOT spokesman Lou Hatter issued this statement:

"VDOT and the Federal Highway Administration now will take into account what impact the project has on the Sammons property and incorporate that consideration into the Environmental Assessment. That process must be finished before the Environmental Assessment is completed. We are still reviewing the decision and have not developed a timeline for that work."

Previously, the cemetery made the list of most endangered historic sites, according to Preservation Virginia.
