Meadowcreek Parkway Moves Forward

Thousands of cars travel daily on roads surrounding our area and Monday night the Meadowcreek Parkway came one step closer to becoming a reality.

Route 250 and McIntire Road is the eventual endpoint of a project that has been in the works for more than 30 years. Charlottesville City Councilor Blake Caravatti believes it is a necessary evil.

"It's an unfortunate thing that I believe we have to do in order to plan for the future," Caravatti explained

The Meadowcreek Parkway is supposed to begin construction in 2008 and City Council voted to push through a resolution that will keep this road on the construction timeline.

"This has been discussed...at least since 2001, and it looks like we're on the edge of going the next step," said Caravatti.

The resolution says that VDOT can begin acquiring the land needed for the parkway. In return, several measures like the loss of city park land and the interchange are being addressed.

"Over the past several years, we have been going back-and-forth on all of these conditions trying to iron them out," said Vice-Mayor Kevin Lynch.

Still several residents came forward worried about the Parkway and its future.

"Once the park is destroyed, it can not easily be reversed," said resident Colette Hall.

"It would be one step closer to making the center of Charlottesville a traffic sacrifice zone for County sprawl," said resident Stratton Salidas.

The project is scheduled to break ground during the 2008 fiscal year. The interchange at McIntire Road and Rt. 250 is an entirely separate project which is still early in the planning process.
