A 19-year-old Culpeper man is dead after being hit by an Amtrak train.

Shortly after 8 AM, the crew of an Amtrak train noticed three men on the tracks about 150 yards north of where Fairfax Street intersects with Wine Street.

The train sounded its horn and began to brake as two of the men safely crossed the track. According to police, the third man continued to sit on the tie and did not move.

Neither of the other two men was injured.

The train was traveling about 40 mph and managed to stop a short distance from the incident, which was near a trestle bridge, which crosses a nearby creek.

Police are withholding the identity of the man pending notification of next of kin.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
