Car Crashes into Albemarle County 7-Eleven

Sept. 3 2013

A sports utility vehicle crashed through the side of the 7-Eleven convenience store near the intersection of Proffit Road and Route 29 shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday.

What was just another weekday at the Albemarle County convenience store quickly changed when a Chevrolet Tahoe jumped the curb and slammed into the 7-Eleven building.

Neither the driver of the Tahoe nor any of the workers or customers inside the store were injured.

Tom Harris is a 7-Eleven employee who was inside the store just feet from the car when it crashed through the wall.

"I heard a loud crash and it got my attention," Harris said. "I looked over and saw glass and shelving coming my way. It felt almost like an earthquake. It was a big impact."

Police have charged the driver with reckless driving and say the investigation into exactly what caused the crash is ongoing.

Building inspectors say the structure is safe for people to occupy. Employees spent the hours after the crash cleaning up the rubble.

As of Tuesday afternoon, store management was in touch with contractors to patch the hole in the building. Employees were hoping to have the store reopen to customers by Wednesday.
