Lead Investigator in Alexis Murphy Case Speaks

Sept. 4, 2013

The lead investigator in the Alexis Murphy case is speaking for the first time.

Tuesday marked one month since her disappearance and there's still no sign of her.

Seventeen-year-old Alexis Murphy disappeared on August 3, after leaving her Nelson County home.

The FBI and Virginia State Police quickly joined the search. A month later and still no sign of Alexis, but lead investigator Billy Mays say the case is heating up.

Mays says the Nelson County Sheriff's Office has received hundreds of tips, both from the area and from across the country. He says some tips have been very helpful, others a complete waste of time, but the search for Alexis is still very much alive.

“As leads continue to come in and information is fresh and available we're going to follow up with that,” says Mays. “As that tapers off, obviously, once we search as much as we can the areas of most interest we'll probably slow down after that. Tips are continuing to come in, that hasn't really slowed. We will continue to follow up as long as those tips are coming in.”

On Tuesday, the FBI announced the missing cell phone of Alexis had been recovered, but no details about where it was found are being released. Also, a red sweater pulled out of the Rockfish River, where crews searched this past weekend, did not belong to Alexis.

The investigation so far has led to an arrest. Randy Allen Taylor is being held in jail, charged with her disappearance.
