Fire is traditionally the biggest threat to homes, destroying more homes every year than all other natural disasters combined. One non-toxic chemical could prevent the fire from even starting.

"It will either prevent a fire from happening or considerably slow down that fire," said Jeff Copeland, from No-Burn.

Copeland showed the Charlottesville Fire Department a new type of non-toxic fire retardant paint called No-Burn.

Copeland lit three 2x2" model houses on fire. All but one of them were treated with the No-Burn. Two minutes later it was easy to see which house was untreated.

No-Burn makes more than just fire retardant paint--it makes upholstery protectant as well--because when it comes to fires, it destroys everything in the home.

From a small burning piece of paper, an unprotected chair and walls were completely engulfed in less than eight minutes. The chair with the No-Burn protection on it never even caught fire.

"It put some char marks on the chair but all you'd have to do is replace the chair ,not a whole house," said Copeland.

When it's exposed to heat, the retardant material goes through a chemical chain reaction to form a protective barrier and will not burn, only bubble until the fire around it goes out. It also eliminates up to 80 percent of the smoke.

"You're taking the fuel away from the fire," explained Copeland.

Right now it takes the Charlottesville Fire Department four minutes to get to a fire in the city.

"The further out into a rural area you are, the longer that response time is going to be [and] in those areas...this product could be immeasurable," said Captain Joshua Davis of the Charlottesville Fire Department.

Whether it stops the fire from spreading, or prevents it from starting at all, it gives the home owners piece of mind, among other things.

"All these things save property, save money, save people's lives and that's what we're in the business of," said Captain Davis.

No-Burn says that some insurance companies are giving up to a 15% discount to consumers if your house is treated with the product.
