The Charlottesville Fire Department is unveiling a piece of steel from the World Trade Center on Wednesday.

The 17-foot, 4,000-pound beam will be on display in the foyer of the new Charlottesville Fire Department on Fontaine Ave. It is a reminder of the sacrifice first responders make every day.

"The significance of having the beam at the Charlottesville Fire Department, and in the City of Charlottesville, is that we create a place of reflection," says Charlottesville Fire Department Chief Charles Werner. "The community can come together and reflect on what happened on 911, remember all those who died and all those who gave their lives saving others - firefighters, EMS, police officers."

The fire department brought it from New York City to Charlottesville back in January 2011. It has been kept in storage for the for the last couple of years until the new building was ready for its installment.

The new Charlottesville Fire Department on Fountaine Avenue and the memorial are expected to open on January 1, 2014.
