A bridge on Route 646 crossing Swift Run in Greene County has been closed due to undermining of one of the bridge's abutments and wing walls. The damage is believed to have been caused by recent high water due to heavy rains.
The undermining was discovered Thursday afternoon by VDOT inspectors and the bridge was closed immediately. VDOT's bridge engineers will evaluate the structure Friday morning and determine how best to repair the damage. Until that assessment is completed it is not known how long the bridge will be closed.
Signs advising residents and motorists of the closure have been posted at both ends of the affected section of Route 646, between Route 624 and Route 810 west of Stanardsville.
The Greene County Sheriff's Office and the county's public schools have been notified of the closure so that emergency responders and school buses can be redirected to avoid the bridge.
Alternate routes: Route 646 west of the bridge is accessible by traveling Route 624 to Route 810, turning left onto Route 810 and traveling to the Route 646 intersection, then turning left onto Route 646. Route 646 east of the bridge is accessible from Route 810 by traveling to Route 624, turning right and traveling to the Route 646 intersection, then turning right onto Route 646.
