Dying Inmate Allowed to Leave Jail

Sept. 19, 2013

A dying inmate at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail has been granted a medical furlough by a judge

Bill Farmer will leave the jail on Friday, Sept. 20, after being sentenced in July to serve three years in prison for a slew of DUIs and other related offenses.

Doctors say Farmer has terminal liver cancer, and has just months to live. Jail officials say his condition has worsened in the last few days, and even they think it’s right for him to be with his family during this time.

"If there were any other options medically for him and he could still serve out the remaining part of his time, we would definitely go for it,” says Beth Boyd, Farmer’s stepdaughter. “But we have no other options. There is no other medical plan in place for him. It's for him to die."

Farmer will return to his home in Madison Heights to receive hospice care and be put on supervised probation.
