A suspicious piece of luggage left near the Pregnancy Center of Central Virginia forced the business to evacuate and kept police busy for hours.

On Saturday January 28, a Pregnancy Center of Central Virginia employee found a luggage bag sitting next to the garbage can they keep in the back of the building. It was reported to Charlottesville police Monday January 30, at 9:30 a.m.

Albemarle County brought in their bomb sniffing dog who did not detect a bomb, but police evacuated the Pregnancy Center and closed the doors to the bus station next door anyway.

"We were still unsure about it so we asked the assistance of the Virginia State police to come in," said Sgt. L.A. Durrette of the Charlottesville Police Department.

State police brought in their bomb techs and robot equipment. With high powered water police shot at the luggage, but only the zipper came off.

"They viewed it with the camera that's mounted on it and they didn't see anything," said Sgt. L.A. Durrette.

Twenty minutes later Virginia police tried it one more time. Once the luggage was opened a bomb tech inspected the luggage himself before giving the all clear.

It wasn't a bomb at all. Clothes, books and hygiene products were the only things in the suspicious piece of luggage, but the Pregnancy Center employees and the Police Department said it's better to be safe than sorry.

Charlottesville Police will hold the items until the owner comes forward to claim what is left.
