Two of Taybronne White's sisters were in court on Friday. Both say they believe their brother is innocent, and that they aren't sure he is getting a fair trial.
"My brother is a very loving person,” says Nahshona White, a sister of the defendant. “He could never have committed such a heinous crime. It's not in his nature or his ability period, and I know that for sure."
Taybronne White is facing first degree murder charges in the deaths of Dustin Knighton, Brian Daniels, and Lisa Hwang. Prosecutors say Taybronne White shot them after a botched robbery and dumped their bodies on the side of a rural road. But family member say he would never have killed his own friends.
"I knew Dustin and Brian,” says Jasmin White, a sister of the defendant. “They have been to my house. They have eaten at my house. Very close. That's why I know he would not do this to his friends."
Jurors heard from crime scene investigators who found a Honda Civic parked in a ditch on Old Brooke Road in Albemarle County hours after the three bodies were discovered on Octonia Road in Greene County. The car was riddled with bullets and full of blood.
Prosecutors say White shot his three friends in that car. Defense attorneys are trying to poke holes in the evidence, saying White was not in the car that night.
“I hope those judges and jurors that have my brother’s life in their hands...I hope they see the truth," says Nahshona White.
White's sisters say they are unhappy there is only one black person on the jury, and they are contacting civil rights groups about the case.
The death penalty is off the table in this case, but White faces life in prison if found guilty.
