A group of UVa students met Monday night to help fight cancer.

UVa's Relay for Life met to welcome new committee members and get excited for this year's events, some participating in a scavenger hunt.

Relay for Life is a year long fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The main event is in the spring, with many mini-fundraising events throughout the year.

If the group raises over $96 thousand this year, it will hit its $1 million cumulative fundraising total.

"We have businesses around Charlottesville that are getting involved, we have all the students, we have faculty, we have -- really the whole university is really stepping up their game and getting involved and, I mean, we've just been so surprised," said Katie Bailey, UVa Relay for Life Co-chair.

"We're over $21,000 raised which is...unbelievable 'cause we just started and our [main] event is in April. So, it's been a really exciting year thus far and we have so many more events coming up that we can't wait for," said Kelly Sullivan, UVa Relay for Life Co-chair.
