The building of the 5th Street Station shopping center is still a mystery for Albemarle County residents and officials.
Earlier in the year the Albemarle Co. Board of Supervisors approved the planned shopping center between 5th Street and Avon with hopes that a groundbreaking could begin towards the end of the year.
So far there has been no construction, but Board Supervisor Duane Snow says that's because they are still not sure on what stores will be in the shopping center.
“We will not actually break ground and start the building of buildings until we get the leases filled and know who's actually coming in,” says Snow. “You can't really do much until you know who's coming as to you would grade the paths and build the buildings.”
As of right now Wegmans is the only store to put its name in for the shopping center.
5th Street Station was put in the works for residents living in southern Albemarle Co. who don't want to travel up 29 North to get shopping done.
“They have to come all the way south of the county through the city and up north and it's a day trip,” says Snow. “That's one of the most requested things I have from my constituents is to have shopping on the south side of town.”
“With Wegmans coming that's going to give them the premiere grocery store,” says Snow.
County officials are still not sure on when that date will be and all residents can do is wait and see what's next for the premiere shopping center.
