Shutdown Brings More Business to Local Camp Resort

October 4, 2013

“We've wanted to see the park for 25 years, here we are and now we can't do it so we're ticked,” says Josephine Lacroix, from

Tourists from all around the country and Canada are feeling the effects of this government shutdown. But a closed gate at Shenandoah National Park opens up a window of opportunity for nearby camp sites.

“This weekend and yesterday morning we had four sites available and with five minutes of opening this morning all sites were sold,” says Michael Leo, owner of Misty Mountain.

The Misty Mountain Camp Resort in Albemarle County is seeing a lot more business because of this shutdown. In fact they are booked for the month of October, and are turning people away.

“Usually we are at 90 to 95 percent, but this has pushed it to the full occupancy level,” says Leo

The campers that did get a reservation are still trying figure out how they will spend their time while in the Commonwealth.

“We were planning on going to the national parks, we were planning on going to Monticello and everything and we just found out that we can’t go because they're closed,” says Nancy LiVolsi. “This trip took us about eight and a half hours, so that’s a long to trip to find out that we can't go to the national park and it's upsetting.”

LiVolsi and her friends drove down from New York in their camper to see what sights Virginia has to offer.

“We do go to different states to see the national parks,” says LiVolsi. “That's why we bought a camper, and it's a shame that this is happening.”

But they have since made other plans on how they will spend the weekend.

“We're going to go to the breweries, we're gonna go to Downtown Charlottesville and see the sights. So hopefully the government gets their act together.”
