Cavs Can't Overcome Penalties, Fall to Ball State

The UVa football team fell to 2-3 on the season after falling 48-27 to Ball State at Scott Stadium on Saturday. The 'Hoos amassed 13 penalties for a total of 93 yards, and had multiple big plays called back due to penalty flags.

Sophomore quarterback David Watford completed 21-of-36 passes for 209 yards, with one rushing touchdown and one interception. Junior running back Kevin Parks added two scores on the ground, and finished with 104 yards on 16 carries.

The Cavaliers led 17-7 early in the second quarter after a 27 yard rushing touchdown by Watford, who tumbled into the endzone for the score. Ball State then scored 17 unanswered points, taking a 24-17 lead on a Keith Wenning 1 yard keeper with 11:26 left to play in the third quarter.

Parks tied things up with a 2 yard score in the third quarter, before the Cardinals tacked on a touchdown and a field goal to make it 34-24 early in the fourth.

Ball State outscored UVa 17-3 in the final quarter, as the 'Hoos offense could only manage a score on a 38-yard field goal by Alec Vozenilek, who was kicking in place of the injured Ian Frye.

UVa will go on the road next to face Maryland, Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
