Pegasus, Critical-Care Ground Transport Units Earn 3yr Accreditation

Oct. 14, 2013

The University of Virginia Medical Transportation Network is celebrating its recent national accreditation by letting CBS19 get a closer look at what they do every day.

The Pegasus helicopter and critical-care ground transport units have earned a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.

The group studied patient care, staffing, quality, training, along with communications and equipment.

The medical staff says this shows the unique type of care UVa is able to provide, even for patients in surrounding counties.

"We're able to stabilize that patient, determine that they need to get back as quickly as possible, and in a short amount of time call the helicopter," says Critical Care Paramedic Tim Braden. "Our equipment is integrated so it fits in either the ambulance or quickly into the aircraft, and then rapidly fly them back to UVa for definitive care."

UVa's Medical Transport Program serves more than 6,000 patients every year.
