A report of a missing teen in Albemarle County sparked an overnight police investigation, culminating with the teen's safe return Saturday morning. Police continue to investigate, as many questions about what happened to the teen remained unanswered.
Around 10:30pm Friday night, the victim's mother posted on Facebook:
"My daughter...is missing--I'm sure abducted. She went out to take photos of the moon and when she didn't come back in right away, my husband found her iPhone in the grass, with moon photos on it, and she is gone. She's 16, 5 feet, 95 pounds. She was in jeans and a dark sweatshirt. Please help us find her."
Neighbors say the girl is a junior at Albemarle County High School and went out to her bus stop on near her home off of Dunlora Drive to take moon photos.
Nearly 12 hours later a neighbor in the Dunlora neighborhood was driving on Rio Road and spotted the missing teen around 11:00am Saturday morning. She was reunited with her family and questioned by police.
Albemarle county's Commonwealth Attorney, Denise Lundsford, lives in the Dunlora neighborhood and has been helping the family and police with the investigation.
"[She] is back home, she is safe and she is being cared for by her family," says Lundsford. "As a community and as a neighborhood we are glad that she is back home."
Albemarle county police say the investigation is ongoing but are not releasing any information about a possible suspect in the teen's disappearance.
