The Better Business Bureau of Central Virginia hosted a 'Shred Day' event on Saturday, where people could drop off any documents they wanted destroyed.

They partnered with the American National University to give people a no hassle way to protect their personal information and get rid of unwanted paperwork.

Paula Stallard with the BBB says that destroyed documents is a much better option than just throwing them away with the rest of your trash.

"Scammers can take that and steal your identity, open accounts in your name and ruin your credit."

The BBB also encourages people to destroy expired debit and credit cards.
