Active Time Of Year For Deer

Deer are much more active right now.

The start of hunting season and mating season are normal for this time of year.

The wet year has caused a shortage of acorns and berries, so the deer are hungrier than usual too.

According to Albemarle county police spokeswoman Carter Johnson, there are a couple of ways to be prepared if a deer darts out in front of you.

“You always need to be aware of the traffic behind you to make sure you are not going to cause a rear-end collision, when you swerve that can cause you to lose control of the vehicle to that’s a hazard as well. It’s a difficult situation and what you really need to do is slow down."

In some cases, it’s unavoidable to hit a deer.

But know that your odds this month are going up, so it might be time to slow down.
