The Albemarle County School Board held a special budget meeting to agree on a budget request recommended by the superintendent.
The board was able to reduce the budget by $249,113 from its 2006-2007 school year budget.
Five programs will receive less money than what board members were hoping for. No program will receive less money than the year before; they will just not receive an extra amount.
Some of the potential changes to balance funding request were made to the Computer Equipment Replacement Fund (- $100,000). There will a reduction in the number of new computer purchased during the '06-'07 school year.
The building fund (maintaining $75,000) and training seminars for teachers will see will see $25,000 less each.
The extra $49,113 the Instructional Technology Specialist program expected has been cut. A program that 250 teachers took part in yearly to discuss how to improve the learning process has seen a $50,000 cut also.
Although many of these programs will not receive the expected financial support as hoped, the board says they will not scale back on the effort put into the school system.
The programs that received reduction were suggested by Albemarle County Superintendent.
"We used staff guidance [deciding where to make reductions]," said school board chairman, Sue Bell Friedman. "We had some questions and some suggestions. In the end again, we really do understand that the superintendent and her staff know where we want to go."
The school board will now submit a $156,563,187 budget to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors. How much of that school system will receive will be determined sometime in April.
The Albemarle County School board will hold their next meeting February 23.
