Mistletoe Market Brings Out Hundreds For Holiday Shopping

November 17, 2013

Hundreds of people got a chance to kickstart their holiday shopping during the 10th-annual Mistletoe Market.

More than 45 vendors opened up shop at the Boar's Head Pavilion on Sunday with items ranging from clothing, to soap and jewelry.

“All of my jewelry is handmade,” says Erin McDermott, owner of Erin McDermott Jewelry. “It's all made from sterling silver, semi-precious stones, fresh water pearls and any other found unique materials.”

“Party on the Head is a headband, and our motto is, 'If you have a party on your head, you have a party in it,'” says Laura Duckworth, owner of Party on the Head. “Once you put it on, it's just fun. You can let your hair down and have a party.”

“Auntie Faye's Spratt is a delicious condiment that is very versatile,” says Faye Wood, owner of Auntie Faye’s Spratt. “You can use it as a dip, a spread, a topping, a dressing, however you want to use it. It's good on everything, and it makes your tongue smack your mouth.”

Ticket sales from the Mistletoe Market help out the Junior League of Charlottesville.

“Our organization provides volunteers for the community, but every year we hand out grants,” says Jennifer Broder, a Mistletoe Market committee member. “The grants go to our different community partners like Children Youth and Family Services as well as the Boys and Girls Club and many others.”

Families and children were also able to take pictures and read with Santa as a part of JLC’s new literary program.

“We're having a literary focus this year, so a lot of our money will be going towards that to really promote literacy throughout the community,” says Broder.

Their literary program also helps the Barrett Early Learning Center, the Virginia Discovery Museum, as well as local schools.

The Junior League hopes to raise $10,000 from this year's Mistletoe Market to go toward its volunteer programs.
